“Doooon’t stop belieeeevin’”, Journey’s 1981 hit could easily be used to describe the Packers’ season as a whole. With too many guys on IR to count, the Packers were not favored or even considered stiff competition when playing most teams in the 2010-2011 season but nevertheless they believed. The Packers were faced with a “win out or go home” situation with two games remaining in the regular season…they believed. After reaching the playoffs, the Packers were challenged with the task of stopping arguably the most explosive offense in the NFL, the Philadelphia Eagles…they believed. Green Bay was then pitted against the #1 seed in the NFC, the Atlanta Falcons…they believed. Green Bay was fortunate enough to clash with the archrival Chicago Bears…they believed. Super Bowl XLV: Steelers vs. Packers…they believed.
The Packers had a tough season leading up to, but none of the previous challenges quite measured up to the task at hand: beating the Pittsburgh Steelers. Pittsburgh being known for their vicious defense and clock consuming running game loomed as a monstrous shadow that probably engulfed some of the Packer’s squad. The Steelers had over 20 players with Super Bowl experience and the Packers had 1, and John Kuhn was on a practice squad not even having game experience. With no previous experience but a lot of the heart the Packers treaded onward to Dallas.
Aaron Rodgers (Super Bowl XLV MVP) threw 3 touchdowns on 24-39 and 304 yards and Nick Collins had a game changing interception return for touchdown to lead the Packers to a 31-25 victory over the Steelers. The Steelers were down big early (21-3 in the first half) before Ben Roethlisberger led them to a 28-25 score midway through the fourth quarter. One thing is for certain, Ben Roethlisberger is no Joe Montana (at least not in this Super Bowl). Desperately needing to go 87 yards with only 1:59 left and 1 timeout remaining, Big Ben couldn’t even make it past the 50 yard line. The Packers sealed the win in the victory formation with Rodgers taking a couple of meaningless snaps and the confetti started to fall as the Packers’ spirits continued to rise.
For a Super Bowl that started out with Christina Aguilera messing up the National Anthem, the half time show dominated by chaos a.k.a. The Black Eyed Peas (in my opinion it was awesome, but a lot didn’t agree), and a big Steelers’ comeback in the second half, the Packers’ fans were pleasantly surprised with the win. I for one will never forget this Super Bowl as long as I live. I hope that all viewers enjoyed the pure competitiveness of yet another amazing Super Bowl matchup as much as I did! And that’s what makes sports great!
